Public Service Commission Secretary\/CEO Mr. Paul Famba has called for support and recognition of internal auditors’ professional body in public institutions to enhance transparency and accountability. He was speaking on 13th May 2025 when he met the leadership of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA, Kenya) at the Commission House, Nairobi.
\u201c Internal auditors play a critical role in monitoring the utilization of public resources and with proper support they can help the country in the fight against misappropriation of funds,\u201d said Mr. Famba.
The Commission CEO further noted the urgent need to anchor the Internal Audit profession d in law\u00a0to ensure standardization, ethical practice and recognition of the professional body.
\u201c Recognition of any professional body starts with proper legislation, and I am glad to learn that this work is in progress. Let\u2019s make it happen within the shortest time possible,\u201d said the Famba.
Speaking in the same meeting the IIA, Kenya Chairperson Ms. Lilian Wangechi highlighted the need for public institutions to align internal audit departments with international standards.
\u201cIIA seeks to train and standardize the audit function in institutions to minimize risks of financial losses and foster transparency,\u201d said Ms. Wangechi.
To ensure internal auditors effectively perform their duties, the IIA Kenya officials also urged the Commission to review; the positioning of the Internal Audit Functions within organizational structures and their\u00a0career progression guidelines to give them the requisite authority\u00a0and independence.
